The trial calendar got underway last week in Fayette County Superior Court where guilty verdicts were affirmed for the defendants prosecuted in all of the cases.
Fayette County Assistant District Attorney David Younker spoke out about "difficult trial" that resulted in the successful prosecution of an elderly man who received five years probation after attempting to shoot his young adult (step) grandson.
John Monroe Edwards was found guilty of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon - the only one of the three charges that stuck. He was not convicted of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, court officials said.
Edwards' defense tried to convince the jury he was justified for shooting at his grandson because the action was done out of fear. The grandson, described as big in stature, entered Edwards' home yelling at the grandfather for picking on his mother.
As a result, the defendant shot at the grandson to get him to leave, but missed him and shot the front door, attorneys said.
In a separate case, Joel Boutier was sentenced to 20 years in prison including 10 of which will be served on probation, after he was found guilty of one count of aggravated battery and one count of aggravated assault while in the Fayette County Jail for a misdemeanor.
In an angry fit, the man used his index finger to split the lip of another inmate, officials said.
Court officials said they expect to resume more major cases in the coming months.
