As far as columnists go, Lois Wyrick is an editor's dream-come-true. Her weekly piece always arrives on time. Her columns consistently spark readers' interest and her love of both family and the art of writing shines through each and every week.

Many of our subscribers have told us that Mrs. Wyrick's column is one of their favorite weekly features in our papers.

Earlier this month, Mrs. Wyrick received some much-deserved recognition. She earned the "1st Place Best Personal Column" award at the annual Trib Publications, Inc. Editorial Conference and Banquet, held in Warm Springs.

Fayette Newspapers staff writer Martha Barksdale personally nominated Mrs. Wyrick for the award. Wyrick took first place ahead of nominees from 30 other Trib Publications newspapers representing communities in Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and North Carolina.

Robert Williams, the publisher of Pierce County, Ga.'s Blackshear Times, judged this year's competition. He described Wyrick's columns as "like having a weekly visit with an old friend, someone who knows you and has many of your same life experiences. Comfortable, fun and entertaining, her columns are a great addition to any newspaper."

Mrs. Wyrick's columns appear weekly in Tuesday's Fayette County News / Today in Peachtree City, as well as the East Coweta Journal, which serves Senoia, Turin and Sharpsburg. Her latest work can be found on page 3A of this paper.

In addition to Wyrick's 1st place award, Fayette County News / Today in Peachtree City took home a handful of second and third place honors in the other nine categories.

The staff earned second place honors in both the "Best Overall Design" and "Best Sports Page" competitions. Editor Trey Alverson took second in the "Best News Story" category for his coverage of the fallout from the scandals that rocked the Griffin Judicial Circuit this Spring.

And freelance photographer James Breest, a recent graduate of McIntosh High School, earned a third place showing in the "Best Sports Photograph" category for a picture he took of his McIntosh classmate Davis Fraker unloading the discus at the county track and field championship.

Fayette County News / Today in Peachtree City also won the overall "Best of Trib" award for accumulating the most combined points in the company's editorial and advertising awards banquets.

The advertising banquet takes place each January.

Trib Publications, owned by Bob Tribble and headquarted in Manchester, Ga., produces community newspapers in small towns across the southeast -- mostly in Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina. Tribble began his newspaper career in Manchester some 50 years ago. His company has been family owned since its inception and continues to expand. Through Tribble's leadership, Trib Publications has managed to grow and avoid the layoffs and furloughs that have troubled larger media companies in recent years. Trib Publications has owned Fayette County News for well over three decades.

Other award winners from this year's Trib Publications editorial banquet include Adel News Tribune, Upson Beacon, Lanier County News, Wiregrass Farmer (Ashburn, Ga.), Marion Times-Standard, Centreville Press, The Fort Valley Leader-Tribune, The Camilla Enterprise, The Sandersville Progress, Ocilla Star, Quitman Free Press and Bamberg Advertiser-Herald.
