Fayetteville resident Tim Thoms will have a chance to offer his insight on the tri-state water battle and other critical water issues as the newly-appointed member of the Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District Governing Board.
House Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge) made the announcement in a release last Friday. Thoms is a registered landscape architect and tree-grower, who said his experience involves assisting with water issues for the past 25 years.
"I'm very honored the speaker even considered me as a candidate," offered Thoms, an alumni of the University of Georgia.
He is also the president and founder of Thoms Tree and Plants, Inc., a plant and brokerage and material consulting firm in Fayetteville. Thoms is the 2010 chairman of the Fayette County Planning Commission. Thoms also runs two farms located in Fayette and Spalding counties.
Regarding his new role, the husband and father of two children, said he hopes to live up to the talent and expertise of Jack Delkins, whose passing last February prompted the state to fill the vacancy, now occupied by Thoms.
As part of the governing board Thoms will meet quarterly with elected officials from the Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District staff to help develop and implement comprehensive water policy and planning strategies for the north metro Georgia region. Thoms noted another major ongoing concern he expects to tackle as an influential figure on the board.
"There's an immediate dark cloud we hanging over our heads for 2010," said Thoms, referencing the tri-state water ruling including Georgia, Alabama and Florida. "We've got to make substantial progress regarding water supply."
Thoms said water conservation, water use expansion, wastewater treatment and stormwater management are the key issues he plans to address. Thoms said he also intends to work with state leaders to find new resources that will provide more water to Georgia residents.
A Fayetteville resident of 26 years, Thoms has served in various leadership capacities, including his current role as chair of the Flint Basin Advisory Council for the Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District.
Thoms affiliations also include the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint Stakeholders of the Metro Atlanta Landscape and Turf Association and the Georgia Wise Council.
