 Sen. Valencia Seay won her primary without a runoff Fayette voters, along with voters from throughout Georgia, will be heading back to the polls Aug. 10 for runoff elections in several statewide races.
Tuesday's election also saw the nominees chosen for the Democratic party in several state House and one state Senate race.
Voters chose incumbent Valencia Seay of Riverdale as the Democratic candidate for the State Senate District 34 seat. Seay defeated former Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill and Fayetteville resident Travis Spruill in the primary. In November's general election, she will seek another term against Fayetteville Republican Zannie (Tiger) Billingslea.
Incumbent Roberta Abdul-Salaam of Riverdale retained her District 74 House seat with a primary victory over Fayetteville's Emory Wilkerson. She has no Republican opposition in November.
In November, District 77 Rep. Darryl Jordan, D-Riverdale, will face Republican James Brown. District 73 Rep. John Yates, R-Griffin, will face Fayetteville Democrat Rose Carroll. Neither of these races were opposed in the primary.
District 16 State Sen. Ronnie Chance, R-Tyrone, District 72 Rep. Matt Ramsey, R-Peachtree City, and District 66 Rep. Virgil Fludd, R-Tyrone, had no opposition in the primary or the general election.
More than 14,500 Republican and more than 4,500 Democrat ballots were cast in Tuesday's election, with Fayette voters, for the most part, agreeing with the choices of the state as a whole.
Karen Handel took 38 percent of the total in the GOP gubernatorial primary in Fayette, while Nathan Deal came in second with 24 percent of the vote. This is the same order they finished statewide, and the two will meet in a runoff for the party nomination.
The race for insurance commission sparked a lot of interest in Fayette County, with former Peachtree City Mayor Harold Logsdon entering the race, then withdrawing due to health reasons.
He threw his support behind Seth Harp, but Harp finished fourth in the race in Fayette and sixth in the race in the state. The runoff for the GOP nomination will be between Maria Sheffield and Ralph Hudgens.
Another candidate from Fayette, Gary Horlacher, finished fifth in the Democratic primary for secretary of state.
