Democratic candidates and the representatives of others battling for wins in today's primary convened for the last time over this past weekend to round up votes from Fayette County and neighboring areas.

Dozens of people came out to a picnic at Newnan's Carl Miller Park on Saturday afternoon where 11 candidates from various races mingled among the crowd and briefly talked about their platforms.

There were no gubernatorial or local candidates present, said Harriete Steele of the Coweta/Fayette Democratic Committee, which sponsored the event.

However, there were some candidates on hand who have roots in Fayette, said Steele.

Gary Horlacher of Peachtree City talked about how his experience as an attorney will help brings ethics back. He noted this as one of the goals he plans to attain as Georgia Secretary of State.

His opponents Gail Buckner, Michael Mills and Angela Moore were on hand to discuss their campaign goals, many of them focusing on ethical standards and job stabilization in office. Georganna Sinkfield, the last of the secretary of state candidates was unable to attend.

Midland's Frank Saunders emphasized his promise to preserve the education system in his race for the Third District Congressional seat now held by Lynn Westmoreland. Saunders said his opponent's call to end the state Department of Education undermines the education process, which is vital to Georgia residents.

Carol Porter, a candidate for the lieutenant governor's post, greeted guests with her husband, Dubose nearby who is one of seven Democrats running for governor.

Other candidates include Conyer's R.J. Hadley, running for the U.S. Senate seat held by Johnny Isakson. Attorney General candidate Ken Hodges of Atlanta was Joe Martin of Atlanta and Brian Westlake of Decatur, candidates for state school superintendent; and Terry Coleman of Eastman and Darryl Hicks of Fayetteville, candidates for labor commissioner.

Beth Farokhi, a candidate for school superintendent, and Rob Teilhet, a candidate for attorney general, sent representatives to the event on their behalf.
