Want to annex to Tyrone? You'll have to pay

Residents and business owners who wish to have their property annexed in the Tyrone town limits will soon have to pay for it.

The Tyrone Town Council approved a fee schedule to process annexation applications at their Thursday night meeting.

The measure will cover the town's costs of advertising fees, attorney fees and staff time that are required as part of the application process.

The measure is intended to help increase the town's tax base if the annexed property is considered taxable, explained Town Manager Richard Newbern.

Tyrone currently does not have a fee schedule, officials said. The proposed schedule consists of a base fee of $600 in addition to the acreage fee which is determined by the size of the parcel the property owner requested to be annexed.

Officials said the property schedule is patterned after the town's existing rezoning fee schedule, officials said.

"The fee is not designed to be burdensome to a property owner," according to Newbern’s report.

He added the town's fee schedule is "in line" with other cities in the Fayette County.
