Martha Barksdale Fayette County News / Today in Peachtree City won three awards -- all for individual excellence -- in the 2010 Georgia Press Association Better Newspaper Contest.
Judges honored news/features reporter Martha Barksdale for her coverage of Fayette's education beat. She earned third place for education coverage in Division E, which is designated for all newspapers in Georgia that publish two or three times weekly.
Cindy Morley, the longtime managing editor of Fayette County News / Today in Peachtree City before stepping down last summer, placed in two photography categories.
Her action shot of McIntosh soccer star Josh Ball from the 2009 state playoffs earned second place in the sports photo competition. Morley's front page picture of fans rooting for the Fayette County Lady Tigers basketball team at the 2009 state championship game was named third place sports feature photo in Division E.
The awards were presented last month during the Georgia Press Association's annual convention at Jekyll Island Convention Center. Members of the Texas Press Association judged this year's contest.
The Tribune & Georgian of St. Mary's won the overall General Excellence Award for Division E.
