A 9-year-old boy who was left in critical condition after a near drowning in a pool at a Tyrone subdivision has died.
Tyrone Police Public Information Officer Lt. Steve Lafferty said doctors pronounced the boy dead Monday at 11:30 a.m. at Scottish Rite Hospital. The boy had been staying in the hospital since the incident occurred June 20.
The victim's identity has not been released because he is a minor, Lafferty said, but he did confirm the child was from Gwinnett County and had been in town visiting his father since Fathers Day.
Investigators said the boy was swimming with friends at the Southhampton subdivision's clubhouse pool, where the lifeguard later noticed the victim under water in the shallow end of the pool.
The lifeguard and observer at the scene pulled the boy from the pool and began giving him CPR before being transported to Piedmont Fayette Hospital, then to Scottish Rite.
It is believed the boy was practicing holding his breath, based on the investigation conducted at the scene.
Tyrone Police officials said they are keeping the victim's family in their thoughts and prayers. Residents are urged to closely monitor their child in pools and when playing during other water-related activities.
